“On our inner journey, we all encounter limitations and resistance at some point, leaving us feeling completely stuck. No matter what we do to move through these moments, it often seems like nothing works. We get caught in a loop, which I sometimes call a bad trip! We believe in our thoughts and fear. We identify with them. We build a whole personality around them, along with some reassuring concepts about reality and our place within it. We seek an explanation, even if it’s not rational, at least a spiritual or religious one that explains the why and how of the reality we experience. Without it, we face emptiness, which is apparently intolerable for most of us. Let’s be honest: we are afraid not to have something to cling to. We have created many Gods to reassure us and to explain what reality is and what our place and role within it are. But there comes a point when we go deeper into ourselves, and none of those concepts holds true. We can choose to escape by clinging to entertaining thoughts, or to go deeper and face the inevitable: Emptiness!
This is equivalent to dying, and therefore, not easy to encounter because we are afraid of death. Tantra is deeply concerned with this inner state, and it has developed various techniques to help us move beyond the ego’s survival mechanisms, which activate the fear of death. These methods, often called esoteric or magical, use sacred sounds, words, symbols, and plants to remove inner obstacles and misunderstandings, heal if necessary, strengthen the observer, and activate inner powers and energy. Learning these methods is highly effective because they liberate us from our ego-fear, not by fighting it but by reabsorbing its energy into awareness. The esoteric aspect of Tantra is not about creating superficial magic; it is about creating real magic: awakening to reality! It involves having the courage to die before dying so we can live awake and not asleep.”
